Renewable energy from manure
Challenge
Burfeindt-Tomforde Energieerzeugungs GmbH & Co KG supplies the neighbouring villages with electricity and heat from its biogas plant in Selsingen in northern Germany. The conversion of the plant to residual materials is a highly topical issue for Burfeindt-Tomforde, as it is for many other biogas plant operators, because if they operate their biogas plant with manure, slurry, waste or residual materials, they benefit from the greenhouse gas reduction quota (GHG quota) for the promotion of renewable energy sources. From an economic and ecological point of view, the utilisation of manure from local farms for energy production is of course also highly interesting.
In order to be able to utilise the substrates, which are difficult to ferment, technical modifications to the biogas plant's feeding technology were necessary, which Brandt GmbH planned and implemented as general contractor.
Solution
Within two years, Brandt installed two new solid matter feeders with capacities of 90 and 115 m³ at the biogas plant, which can hold various residual materials such as manure or dry chicken manure. An integrated screw conveyor system transports the mass to the downstream customised shredding and pumping technology. The scales and automatic dosing system ensure that the substrate is evenly distributed throughout the day. In a second step, a shredding unit ensures that the solids are shredded and mixed with liquid to produce a pumpable homogeneous biosuspension, which is then conveyed into the fermenter.
Brandt planned, designed and implemented the integration of the entire feeding technology as the general contractor, thereby optimising the entire fermentation process. The Burfeindt-Tomforde biogas plant not only benefits from more favourable input and operating costs, but with the conversion to residual materials for the production of renewable energy from biogas - and even biomethane in the future - the plant is also set up for the future.
